A complete audit. A paste-ready fix for your backlist.
"My books are published, the reviews are fine, and nobody can find them."
Your series is live, but the books still do not surface — in search, in their categories, or when an AI assistant is asked for a book like yours. The listings were set at launch and never revisited.
Backlist Bureau audits your live catalogue and delivers a paste-ready fix for each title: keywords, categories, subtitle, description, series linkage, back-matter, and pricing. Built from your books, for you to approve and apply in your own account.
Approval-first. No logins, ever. You keep all your rights.
The problem, in an author's words
Paraphrased from published author accounts and surveys — not testimonials for this service:
- "I spent the money, the reviews are good — and nobody can find them."
- "Marketing is the hardest part — harder than writing the book."
- "My book launched quietly and disappeared in a week."
If your backlist was listed once and left alone, our premise is that each of these is a listing problem before it is a writing problem:
- Keywords picked by instinct, never checked against how readers search.
- Categories guessed, so the book sits on the wrong shelf.
- A description that summarises the plot but buries the tropes and facts readers scan for — or leaves those facts only in cover art and image-only pages, outside the listing text that search and AI assistants actually read.
- No series path: Book 1 does not route a finished reader to Book 2, and the back-matter in your earlier books points nowhere.
- A legacy price set under the old royalty band, which may never have been re-checked after the band moved in July 2026.
Why this is a 2026 problem, not a 2023 one
- A July 2026 study of 14,419 self-published genre-fiction titles (2023–mid-2026) found revenue per human-only book down about 17% between 2023 and 2025 releases as titles with substantial AI text made up roughly a fifth of the sampled catalogue. The researchers call the link associational, not proven causation; the study has not yet been peer-reviewed. In a more crowded catalogue, being correctly indexed is basic maintenance.
- KDP cut new title creation to 2 per format per week on 21 September 2026. The cap governs creating titles — already-published listings are unaffected — but a relaunch that adds new editions or formats is now a sequence to plan, not a weekend upload.
- KDP expanded the 70% ebook royalty band to $2.99–$12.99 on 7 July 2026. If your series was priced under the old $9.99 ceiling, that decision may never have been re-checked against the new band.
- Discovery is becoming conversational. Amazon's Rufus assistant works from listing text. If your book's genre and tropes live only in an image, they never enter the listing text an assistant reads — put the facts in the description, in words.
Sources and dates are listed in the venture's research file. Nothing above is a promise about your books.
What the fix is — exactly
For each title in the fix, you receive paste-ready copy, in paste order:
- Full audit report — 12 points assessed per title, with the failure named: indexing, conversion, or read-through.
- 7 keyword strings — natural language, relevant to your book, no stuffing.
- 3 category selections — with the reason for each.
- Subtitle recommendation.
- Hook-first description — the pitch in the first lines, plus a structured block carrying your genre and trope facts in plain text.
- Back-cover copy.
- Series-page copy.
- Back-matter next-book copy for every title in the series.
- Pricing check against the current royalty bands.
- Paste-order checklist — you apply it all, in your own account, in the order given.
Built from your books and current retailer rules. You approve every word before you use any of it. We never log in to your accounts, and we publish nothing.

Run it against your own series starter in about 15 minutes. Use your score to work through the listing issues and plan your fixes.
The three ways to work with the Bureau
1. Backlist Fix Kit — $129, one time
The DIY system: metadata workbook, category-picker worksheets, subtitle and description frameworks (hook-first, plus the structured trope block), the blurb module, series-linkage and back-matter templates, the $12.99-band pricing checklist, a KDP upload-cap sequencing planner, and a plain-language KDP AI-disclosure explainer.
2. Series Starter Fix — $495 per series · DFY
Send your series starter and intake answers. Within 10 business days from complete intake + payment, you receive the full fix listed above — audit, keywords, categories, subtitle, description, back cover, series page, back-matter, pricing check, and paste-order checklist — with 2 revision rounds included. +$95 per additional title in the same series. Also included: a recorded before/after AI-recommendation check for the titles in scope, delivered as a dated observation — an observation, not an outcome promise.
Async application form; capacity is capped and the current status is stated on the form.
3. Catalog Desk — $179/month
For authors maintaining a catalogue: a quarterly discoverability refresh for up to 10 titles, one new-release metadata and launch-asset pack per quarter, and one trope-clip script pack per month. Month-to-month, cancel anytime. Unused quarters do not bank. Releasing your first book? The Kit or the Starter Fix is the better buy.
Our guarantee — and its limits, in plain language
Process guarantee: if any promised document is missing or not built from your material as briefed, we fix it or refund that product. A DFY first draft may be declined before revisions for a full refund.
What we will never promise: sales, rank, reviews, retailer placement, also-boughts, or AI recommendation. Anyone who promises you those for a metadata fix is selling you something we won't. What we sell is a complete, checked, paste-ready fix — delivered as described.
Compliance, stated on the page
- Relevance-first metadata only. No keyword stuffing, no misleading categories, no review manipulation, no also-bought manipulation.
- No ghostwriting, at any tier. We write listing and marketing copy from your books; we do not write books.
- Our drafting uses AI assistance, disclosed here and to every client. Your Kit and Fix include the KDP explainer on AI-generated vs AI-assisted disclosure.
- We decline catalogues built on undisclosed AI-generated text, review manipulation, or miscategorised content — and we will tell you why.
FAQ
My books are already published. Is this for me?
Yes. This service exists for live books. A pre-launch author with no catalogue yet needs launch assets first. The Desk's quarterly new-release pack covers those for catalogue clients, and the Kit's frameworks will still help you list the first book deliberately.
Do you log in to my KDP / retailer account and make the changes?
Never. We will never ask for, receive, or hold KDP or retailer passwords or logins. You approve every word, then apply the changes yourself in your own account using the paste-order checklist. We publish nothing on your behalf. Your account stays yours.
Will this get me sales / a better rank / AI recommendations?
We do not promise any of those, to anyone, ever. We promise a complete audit and a paste-ready fix built from your books and current rules. What a correctly indexed listing does after that depends on the market, the book, and readers — none of which we control.
Which genres does this fit?
The frameworks and examples are built for romance, mystery / thriller, and sci-fi / fantasy, including romantasy. Other fiction can use the Kit's core frameworks, but the genre material won't all apply — buy accordingly.
What is the structured trope block?
A short, plain-text section of your description that states the book's genre, tropes, series order, and comparable reading experience. It puts the facts from your cover art into listing text for scanning readers, search, and text-reading AI assistants.
Why does pricing need checking?
Because KDP expanded the 70% royalty band to $12.99 on 7 July 2026. A series priced years ago was priced under a different band. We check each title against the current band and show you the arithmetic. The decision, and the change in your account, are yours.
Do I keep the rights to my books and these assets?
Yes — all of them. Your books are yours, your accounts are yours, and the delivered copy is yours to edit and reuse across editions and retailers.
What if I have no reviews to quote?
Then nothing is quoted. We never invent a review, a quote, or a result — and the templates tell you to leave that block empty rather than fill it with anything you do not have permission to use.
Refunds?
Covered by the process guarantee above: missing or off-brief documents are fixed or refunded; DFY first drafts may be declined before revisions for a full refund; projects we decline before work begins are refunded in full.
